XML fetishists (university) claim that one of it's best features is
"readability".

with the correct reader, tar.gz is easier to read than XML. Although the hate
for XML is not really justified, it's a way to serialise trees (all other
things people do with it are an abomination), and kind of works as long as you
don't have to touch it with your hands. Having a working XML parser lib makes
it a lot less dirty (not XML itself of course, but it kind of works like a
mudflap preventing the mud from squishing all over your face.)
