Shouldn’t using GNUisms then provide a meaningful error when they appear
on BSD make?

Maybe some message like »That asshole who wrote that Makefile should be
hit by a clue bat. Well, just tell him that at line XX there’s a GNUism
which prevents his software to be used on sane systems.« would be
enough.
