For terminal detach/attach I could use dtach. I'm only after a
solution for scrollback buffer. Probably this should become a separate
tool.

If you don't use screen/tmux with st, what other tool comes to mind
for a scrollback buffer?

I would even go a bit further. It'd be absolutely fine for me to have
something like a tee-backend in st. All I want is to have full logging
of all output when building various stuff, now stali related stuff.
