ssh is exactly one of the reason why ncurses makes sense.
If you design a client to be very efficient and sparing in terms of
refreshes, even with a slow internet connection you are able to chat
freely. I see endless possibilities when it comes to using a dedicated
server somewhere in the world for all your messaging-needs.
This would also be a good way to circumvent nasty NATs by just
"tunneling" it through SSH.
