Are there compelling reasons to limit the modes here at all? What would be
the issue with retaining every mode enumerated in glyph_attribute?

May I ask why the patch was included in the message body as opposed to an
attachment? I am unfamiliar to mailing list conventions, but it seems that a
discrete file would be more easily managed.
