it has been implemented in this way because of the following SI
convention:

(section 5.4.3 Formatting the value of a quantity)
same should be in ISO 80000-1 and NIST SP 811 / SP 330 (the US
interpretation of SI)
however you are free to upload a patch for that specific small-screen
usecase to the wiki!
