My /etc/X11/Sessions/dwm looks like this:

#!/bin/sh

xsetroot -solid black

while true
do
  /home/antoni/bin/dwm-update-status.sh
  echo `cat ~/.dwm-status`
  sleep 4
done | dwm

I have roughly the same thing in .xinitrc if I want to start my xsession via
startx.

Cheers,
