Yes, I knew I had forgotten to provide some information..

I already use a UTF-8-capable font:

#define FONT "-misc-fixed-bold-r-normal--0-0-75-75-c-0-iso10646-1"

This font has no problem rendering umlauts, cyrillic chars and whatnot
on the console, so this is not the problem.
