I don't think you'll ever stop people from patching it to wherever it
isn't ;-)

I'd like to see some research as well, but don't know of any. I'll bet
Steve Jobs has some, though. FWIW, I'd prefer the bottom since, for
whatever reason, my eyes tend to gravitate there.
