I think you're forgetting about lots of console apps that use alt.
Something as common as readline uses alt extensively for moving around
words end editing. Some of us still use irssi for IRC instead of netcat,
alt is very useful there as well. You can, of course try to make your wm
shortcuts not collide with all the programs you use, but I don't see the
point, when you have so many other modifier keys available on most
keyboards.
