I honestly don't have a problem with smartphone bloat. I'm OK with
the tradeoff of having my email, calendar, browser, camera, etc all on
one device. All I own technology-wise is a high-powered desktop, a
low-powered notebook (free from cr-48 pilot program), and my HTC Aria.
 For me the smartphone fills in all the gaps since I don't own a
PDA/Organizer, camera, etc.

Plus it was a free as an upgrade - didn't cost me a cent. The bloat
is fightable if you set up a quick task-killer shortcut on your
homescreen (only thing that keeps running all the time is opera mobile
and my email). A physical keyboard would be nice for the rare
occasions that I need to use SSH and don't have access to my desktop
or notebook, but it does the job in a pinch and at the low low price
of $0 I'm not going to complain too much.
