Dot does support some manual tuning of the layout.

Wasn't dot originally introduced as another preprocessor for troff?

Or am I think of dag?

Looking at the documentation for DOT, I don't see any format listed
under -T that corresponds to troff. I suppose you'd have to use
eps instead.
