No, come on, this is some GNU FUD. For one thing, ls detects whether it
outputs to a terminal or to a pipe and doesn't use ANSI colour if the
output is to a pipe or a file, unless you *force* it to.

Also GNU ls does not default to colouring it's output, but usually most
people have an alias in which ls is aliased to ls --color=auto (which
wouldn't colour to a pipe). So if you want to be *sure* you can: unalias
ls or use /bin/ls, or use arg's lsx command.
