I have done it this way:
Inb: `grep "^From: " /home/michael/mail/inbox/new/* | wc -l` dwm:`grep
"^From: " /home/michael/mail/dwm/new/* | wc -l` dug:`grep "^From: "
/home/michael/mail/debian-user-german/new/* | wc -l`

this works for me with my Maildir-directory,
