I'm not writing to argue with your position, but
merely for (off-topic) clarification of a single
point. You're message implies that you have little
control over what is happening to your environment, as
if applications were constantly changing the
environment of your shell in such a way that you never
know its status and can't easily avoid the changes. As
I see it, this would be a problem only if you tend to
do all of your work in a single shell. That would be
quite a limiting experience, in my opinion.
