[dwm] Screen Margins

Greetings

Is it possible to create screen margins? I mean desktop areas that
cannot be covered by maximized windows.
For example sth similar to the slit effect (but embedded to the
desktop). I think the dwm status bar does that on the fly. Any
suggestions?
