yes my .screenrc -> bell_msg has a real ^G.
Still doesn't work :( ... I'll have a try without ^G like your bell_msg.

@Andew: Do a ' man rxvt ' and grep for urgentOnBell. If this option does not
exist, than
this is your problem.
