The menu only appears on request like pressing C-M-a or C-M-p.
It'll grab focus until you press ESC or Return. Beside of that,
the menu window is a different window than the bar. You can run
the bar in the north, but the menu in the south.
There is no key combination to hide the bar, but if you don't
want the bar at all, you'd need to edit the 'which wmii' script
and disable all bar related stuff, as well as disabling all bar
related stuff in wmiirc.
On the other hand
wmiir write /bar/ctl 'display 0'
hides the bar manually (you can bind a key combo to it),
'display 1' displays the bar again.
