Something strange is going on there. Is it possible that you
somehow have control characters in your $DISPLAY? Otherwise, I
can't imagine how that socket path could come to be, other than
a buffer overflow somewhere.

You might try piping the output of stdout and stderr through
vis(1) and seeing if you get a different path.
