It's probably just default mode (mod-d).
I use wmii just like this all the time and the newer revisions make it
very easy to just resize windows at the dividers so that they will
stack up automatically when the border hits the next client.
In my view this is *the* killer feature of 2008 :D
I never used stacked mode again since the existence of this "feature".
I'm still not sure if that was intended though.
look at this screenshot I made some time ago. It's all default mode,
although it looks and feels just like stacked mode. i.e. you can still
use i.e. mod-k/mod-j to cycle through the clients, but you have a lot
more flexibility...
