Do you have a lot of bar applets/widgets running? Do they take up so
much room that wmii doesn't have any space to draw them?

Yes, I'm currently using colors from Vim's wombat colorscheme for wmii:

Selcolors are used in the left bar to indicate the current view.
That's why drawing witray with selcolors doesn't make sense to me: the
tray isn't selected / current at any time. It should just be there,
in the background, not shouting for attention, IMHO.
