Well I like mplayer most, though iirc it has many reqs, maybe one could alos
use something like ffplay.

As for torrent clients btd sounds nice, but havent yet tried it, I use
transmission-daemon, and transmission-remote as cli interface, if I need to
monitor progress of some download I use:

watch -n 1 transmission-remote -l

Or something similar
