thanks for your patch! I actually thought about this a few months ago
and even though the gz-tarball is pretty big, there's no denying that
gunzip is available on every system.

In comparison I got the best results with xz and the 2e-option,
yielding a 990K-tarball on master. However, even though there are 50%
savings, it's hard to beat gzip in regard to its simplicity. Compared
to this, xz has only one stable implementation that I know of and the
file format seems to not be well-defined.
