The same error. I've tried to do something like debugging in my wmiirc
(need to say - I have this failure with the default wmiirc too). So...
I've placed

wmiir ls /

at the beginning of my wmiirc and it had shown:

client/
colrules
ctl
event
keys
lbar/
rbar/
tag/
tagrules

So, wmiir works, but... but still fails with

wmiir: fatal: cannot write file '/ctl': broken pipe
