You might try trayer. You'll probably want the undocumented
wistrut utility, which isn't built by default...
cd wmii/cmd/strut && make && sudo make install
trayer &
sleep 1
wistrut $(wmiir read /tag/sel/index | awk '/panel:trayer:panel/{print $2}) &
