You're still being vague. What's the exact error message and/or exact
font string you're trying to use?
I just used xfontsel to pick a terminus variant:
-*-terminus-*-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
Changing the line in config.h from:
#define FONT "-misc-*-medium-r-semicondensed-*-13-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*"
to:
#define FONT "-*-terminus-*-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1"
changed the font to terminus.
