Just choose proper font, eg.:
perl -E'binmode(STDOUT, ":encoding(UTF-8)"); say "\N{HEAVY BLACK HEART}"' | dmenu -fn "-*-dejavu sans mono-medium-r-normal-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1"
