the password given with the k-flag only sets the connection password.
It has nothing to do with NickServ authentication, which is necessary
here.
I don't know why NickServ even came to be when the RFC specifies a
connection password that can be set with PASS.
To properly register with NickServ, you would have to send the
following command
:m NickServ IDENTIFY yourpassword
