And for highlighting I'd suggest to just draw an additional border
like it is done now, but with a pixel of backgroundcolor between the
inner and outer border (which means that a textbox should be 8 pixels
taller than fontheight, and 8 pixel wider than the textwidth. 4 pix on
each side: 1 for the outer border, 1 for inner border, 1 for
background between the borders, and 1 for background between the inner
border and the text).
