My understanding of what happens is such that an xterm gets started with
some default geometry, say 80x25; then screen is spawned inside it;
*then* it gets resized to the tile size in dwm which make the prompt
scroll half-way (or so) down the xterm window. This is how screen
behaves upon resizing and there's nothing wrong with that. You can press
^l to have the prompt move up or just start using the terminal in its
new size. (Try launching xterm in float mode and resize it manually. To
see a similar behaviour.)

To overcome this problem you can start xterm with -geometry of the same
number of rows and colums as it has after resizing to your master tile
size. This way the prompt will be where it's supposed so.

If the top half of the screen is truly unusable may I suggest that you
use another terminal emulator. I use rxvt-unicode and apart from the
moving prompt in screen there are no problems with it.
