That does not explain anything.

What is your font specification in the config.h?

Mine is (for example):

static const char font[] =
"-*-terminus-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*";

(this is wrapped, it's one line).

Make sure that there are no unwanted spaces in the specification.
