IIRC normally that's not a kernel thing... Usually, you need to set up
X to recognize the buttons, and then use xmodmap to rename the keys to
something useful. For instance, my ~/.Xmodmap contains the following
lines:

keycode 178 = XF86XK_WakeUp
keycode 222 = XF86XK_PowerOff
keycode 223 = XF86XK_Sleep

Just use xev to find which keycodes they generate, and then look up
the XF86XK* key names that you can assign them to. (I forget where the
file is that contains those... maybe grep somewhere in /usr/X or so.)
