 Speaking of fixed in newer kernels, does writing to ctl files work there?
 In 2.6.23, I get EPERM/EACCES:

~/n/wmii; echo -n view p9 >ctl
zsh: operation not permitted: ctl
~/n/wmii; echo -n view p9 >>ctl
zsh: permission denied: ctl
