Perhaps you have too narrow an understanding of "one thing"?

As others have pointed out, the people who created Unix devised numerous
languages, big and small, to address the problems they had to solve.

Little languages like sed and awk (and, while we're at it, sh) are part
of the heart and soul of Unix. If you don't see the truth of that
statement, you really don't understand Unix.

In fact, sed does do one thing and does it (fairly) well: it applies
editing commands to a stream of text.

I don't think you're going to convince anyone otherwise.
