Almost my entire broader community uses LaTeX as the primary format. However,
I have noticed that most people are able and willing to use PDF as a document
interchange format for most things now. For my personal documents that need
formatting of some sort or another I tend to prefer using something like the
Heirloom Documentation Tools, which is a troff with UTF-8 and OTF support.

So, the only real need for docx or the like formats for most people I think,
is when you actually have to collaborate on a document. In that case, I think
you're stuck with one of the larger applications that aren't very great
because you need a degree of compatibility. However, if you can use PDF, I
would use that instead, and if you can do it one better and get them to use
something like plain text, even better.
