It is not as much of a problem of inbox size as it is of having to deal
with a lot of traffic.

If you are following many mailing lists you will need to filter each and
put each message in a folder depending of its origin. You might end up
with a big number of messages, folders and filter rules in place in order
to make it work. So it will work, but it will be more complex than using
a protocol and a client that were designed to manage public discussion
and conversations from the start.
