I finally wound up handling the flash by making an ext2 filesystem,
adding noatime to fstab, and moving most of /var and all of /tmp to a
ramdisk. I'll probably move to jffs2 before too long.

The most important thing to know about putting your own distro on the
Aspire One is that hardware support is flaky unless you're running a
2.6.27 release candidate kernel.
