i wrote a script to create such a tree:

it depends on other code in the repo - should be trivial to rewrite in someting else

on gentoo:
grab bin and category from /var/db/pkg

on debian:
proaibly have to parse /var/lib/dpkg/status? or figure out its perl hell? i know it has a 'debian-menu' thing for desktop managers too, havent looked into that
