Use DESTDIR=~/wmii-bla to install wmii in you home directory, then
backup ~/.wmii-3 and restart using ~/wmii-bla/usr/local/bin/wmii.

Try 'make uninstall clean install' to purge any files in /usr/local
from previous installations, also mv ~/.wmii-3 ~/.wmii-3.old to
avoid using an old wmiirc.
