That is normal, because the internal fallback is default mode,
until /def/colmode is set differently.

Some values in /def/ are inherited on creation time only for the
specific object, they are /def/{col*}. All others have effect on
all existing objects as well. (I think it would be rather
annoying if /def/colmode or /def/colwidth would have effect on
existing objects). Btw. this proves that these options are very
questionable and that's why I'm not happy about them.
