  I still don't know what the problem is here, but I've heard that it
can be caused by some X locale funkiness. Apparently using this

 Oh hm, but you have japanese rendered, so maybe it's something
different. Tobias, you said "the same font" works in a terminal, how
do you know this? What terminal, what font?
