Yea tmux is cool. So is dvtm, try that too.

I doubt that requiring an extra keystroke will be accepted by mainline
dwm, but it seems feasible to implement. I expect such a change would
require a patch of dwm because i don't know how it could be done
external to dwm. If you want to hire me to write that patch, let me
know. See http://dwm.suckless.org/patches/keymodes for something that
might be similar to what you want.
