You can set it on your ~/.xinitrc or on ~/.wmii-<current_version>/wmiirc
Actually I use this method (fbsetbg is just a script for lazy people, taken from blackbox):
 
==== ==== ==== ====
$ tail -n2 ~/.wmii-2.5/wmiirc
fbsetbg /mnt/data/Images/various_art/They_came_from_above_rmx.png
status &
==== ==== ==== ====

Don't touch /etc/profile
