FWIW, MS bar is only on the bottom by default. You can configure it to
any of the 4 sides. Same is true of KDE and (I think) Gnome. I haven't
used Apple enough to know, but I'd bet theirs is configurable as well.

Me too, but I don't really care that much. I like it on the bottom.
